Boise State football offensive coordinator Dirk Koettera 42-year veteran coach, announced his retirement from the game Thursday evening via Facebook.

Koetter will be replaced by Broncos offensive coordinator Nate Potter, according to several reports.

The longtime college football and NFL coach cited numerous reasons why he might leave his position, although he did not explicitly state a specific cause. Koetter, 65, was in his first season as Boise State’s offensive coordinator and helped the Broncos reach third place and the CFP quarterfinals before falling to Penn State.

Koetter previously served as head coach at Boise State from 1998 to 2000 and Arizona State from 2001 to 2006 before joining the NFL as an offensive coordinator. He called plays for the Jaguars, Falcons and Buccaneers before being named head coach of Tampa Bay in 2016, a position he held until 2018.

Koetter then was the Falcons’ offensive coordinator from 2019-2020 before retiring from coaching and returning as an offensive analyst for the Broncos in 2022.

Here’s why Koetter is stepping down:

Why is Dirk Koetter retiring?

Koetter, after announcing he was retiring from coaching, cited numerous concerns about the current era of college football, although he did not explicitly provide a reason for his decision.

In a message to his Facebook page, Koetter noted the realignment, name, image and likeness, transfer portal and lack of a college football governing body as things changed in the sport he disagrees with.

“College football is changing rapidly and perhaps not for the better,” Koetter wrote. “Conference realignment, roster limitations, transfer portal, NIL, lack of a governing body with any power are all issues that need to be addressed.”

Koetter also asked Boise State fans to donate to “The Horseshoe Collective” so it can have a better chance of retaining players who he says are being offered huge NIL offers to transfer in another school.

“We are currently late in the NIL game,” he wrote. “Our best players are being offered between 2 and 10 times what we can offer. We are losing recruits in the portal to schools that are outbidding us. … Money is an issue.”

Koetter is expected to remain with the team in a different role, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
