Report: Burnes rejects Giants, agrees to $210 million deal with Diamondbacks originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Corbin Burnes don’t come to San Francisco.

The popular free agent right-handed pitcher agreed to a six-year, $210 million contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported Friday evening. ESPN’s Jeff Passan also reported the details of the deal.

Right-hander Corbin Burnes and the Arizona Diamondbacks are in agreement on a six-year, $210 million contract, sources tell ESPN.

After a quiet winter, Arizona has the best pitcher on the market. And Burnes plays for a dangerous NL West team. First on the news: @JonHeyman.

The Giants pursued Burnes and were considered one of two favorites to land the former Cy Young Award winner, along with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reported Thursday that the The Giants had an offer on the table to Burnes but that their patience was running out and they could move on.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported shortly after the deal was broken that the Giants and Blue Jays had offered Burnes more money, but tax implications in Arizona factored into his decision.

Giants ace Logan Webb and their new shortstop, Willy Adames, had implemented a full-field press to woo Burnes to San Francisco, but it didn’t work.

Adames said during his introductory press conference on December 12 that he planned to call Burnes to the Giants and a few days later he went on KNBR 680 to discuss a “really positive” conversation with his former Milwaukee Brewers teammate.

Webb was giddy at the thought of throw in the same rotation as Burnes.

“It’s crazy, if he comes, the number of stud pitchers I’ve been able to play with so far in my career, there’s so many Cy Youngs,” Webb told Jomboy’s Chris Rose Media on December 16. “It’s actually pretty. cool… if Corbin goes out there and pitches, and I pitch right after him the next day, it’s literally perfect, we’re complete opposite pitchers, and I think that’s is a good thing. I want too many of the same guys. It’s almost like a perfect match. But I’m not the one making the decisions.

“I know Corbin a little bit, I would be over the moon if we had Corbin. I think he would be a huge addition, obviously. One of the best, if not the best pitcher in baseball. Adding a guy like that would be amazing.”

So instead of pairing Burnes with Webb at the top of their rotation, the Giants will have to face the ace multiple times per season for the foreseeable future.
