Another state championship banner heads to the Quiet Corner.
Killingly capped a memorable undefeated season with a thrilling 48-33 victory over Sheehan in the Class SS final Friday night at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
This is Killingly’s third state championship victory in seven years.
Lethal junior running back Hayden Allard totaled 267 yards on 36 carries and scored five touchdowns, while senior running back Everton Brown gained 125 yards on 12 carries.
Killingly built a 27-21 halftime lead. The big highlight was an 81-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Allard.
Allard, who accounted for all four of Killingly’s touchdowns in the first half, scored on a 3-yard run with just 35 seconds left in the second quarter. Allard’s score was set up on a terrific passing play from Quinn Sumner to tight end Hunter Allard, who made a leaping catch at the 3-yard line from Sheehan.
Top-seeded Killingly (13-0) extended its lead to 34-21 on the first drive of the second half when Brown ran 40 yards for a touchdown.
No. 3 Sheehan (10-3) responded on a short TD run from senior Jack Grant and a 2-yard TD run from Josh Durant that made it 34-33 with 1:47 left in the third quarter.
But this was Killingly’s year.
Allard scored his fifth touchdown on a 13-yard run early in the fourth quarter. And then Killingly raced 94 yards after recovering a Sheehan fumble and Sumner capped the championship drive with a 1-yard sneak.
