The Los Angeles Rams defeated the San Francisco 49ers 12-6 in a rain-soaked game to boost their NFL play-off hopes.
With the game tied 6-6 in the fourth quarter, rookie kicker Joshua Karty made a 27-yard field goal to put the Rams up by three.
Karty then closed out a final drive with his fourth basket with 18 seconds left.
“This team can win in different ways,” Rams coach Sean McVay said.
Neither team scored a touchdown Thursday in a soggy Levi’s Stadium in California — the first game without a touchdown of the 2024 season.
McVay added: “I thought the defense came out strong, every time.”
San Francisco opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 53-yard field goal from Jake Moody, before adding to its total early in the third to give the 49ers a 6-3 advantage.
But with the play level midway through the third quarter, Niners receiver Deebo Samuel, who had recently complained on social media about not getting the ball back enough, ended up dropping it on a play key, provoking boos from the home crowd.
It was the eighth defeat in 14 games for last season’s beaten Super Bowl finalists, a further blow to their already slim play-off chances.
With San Francisco struggling, the Rams hold an 8-6 record for their campaign so far.
