Manchester United defender Millie Turner says club team-mate Gabby George’s return to international football with England is a huge achievement.
The 27-year-old made her first England appearance for six years as the Lionesses beat Switzerland 1-0 in Sheffield last night.
Four Manchester United players started the match for England; they are George, Turner, Maya Le Tissier and Grace Clinton. All four players put in strong performances, with Le Tissier particularly impressive on the right and Clinton scoring the winner.
Speaking to WSL Full-Time after the match, defender Turner expressed her delight at Manchester United’s representation in the England team while also paying tribute to her club teammate George for sealing her return to England.
“I’m very happy,” Turner said. “I’m very happy that we can all represent (Manchester) United and all represent our country.
“I think everyone (from Manchester United) did very well tonight. I have to give a special shout out to Gabby (George) who hasn’t played for England for six years. For her to come back after these two ACL injuries is simply a great achievement.
Reflecting on the victory, Turner was pleased with what England produced in the first half and says the clean sheet was a real positive.
She said: “I think in the first half we were really positive, really consistent. In the second half we just let it down a bit but showed a lot of positivity in getting a clean sheet. This is what we are proud of and I hope that in the future we can continue on this path.
Turner has had to wait for her opportunities with England, but she now has a real chance of representing the nation at UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 next summer. Looking ahead to 2025, the defender says she needs to focus on performing well at club.
She said: “I just have to keep doing what I do at the club, keep trying to be as consistent as possible. I hope Sarina (Wiegman) will keep an eye out and see what I can do.
England return to action in February 2025 when they begin their final UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign with matches against Portugal and Spain.
