It seems that Yankees are ready to move on from two of their starting infielders.
As things stand, New York also has no plans to pursue Anthony Rizzo Or Gleyber Torres in free agency this offseason, YES Network’s Jack Curry said on Monday night’s edition of Yankee Hot Stove.
Both players have expressed interest in returning at the end of the season, but it appears the club has other plans.
Rizzo was a solid leader and steady left-handed bat for most of his three years in the Big Apple, but his offensive production ultimately dipped as he battled the injury bug in each of the last two seasons.
The Yankees could entrust the task to the young people Ben Rice at first base, or they could take a big hit on someone like the former Mets slugger Pete Alonso or three times Gold Glover Christian Walker on the free agent market to replace him.
Torres also enjoyed his share of big moments in pinstripes, but his streaky bat, questionable baserunning and shaky infield defense left a lot to be desired at times over the years.
If things don’t change, Curry said he’d be willing to take a gamble on the 24-year-old top prospect. Caleb Durbin will be on the Yankees’ Opening Day roster, and there’s a chance he finds himself in the mix as Torres’ replacement.
Durbin was recently added to the 40-man roster and shined in Arizona Fall League action with two doubles, a triple, five home runs and 29 stolen bases in 21 games.
