Simone Inzaghi was named Coach of the Year at the Gran Galà del Calcio this evening and committed his future to Inter. “I hope to stay here for a long time.”
The ceremony is the Italian version of the PFA Awards, with votes from members of the Italian Players Association (AIC).
As expected after dominating the Scudetto race last season, Inter also featured prominently among the nominees and winners tonight.
Unsurprisingly, Inzaghi was named Coach of the Year, although Gian Piero Gasperini was a contender after leading Atalanta to Europa League triumph, while Thiago Motta was nominated for his exploits at Bologna before joining the Juventus.
Inzaghi voted Serie A coach of the year
“Of course I am very happy to receive this award, especially from Luciano”, said Inzaghi after he was introduced to him by Italian coach Spalletti.
“Above all, I want to share this reward with my players, because it would not be possible without them. I also share it with my club, who made sure we had everything necessary at our disposal, and the supporters who always support us.
Few coaches turn the team around better than Inzaghi, who also currently has Inter second in the Champions League table and still undefeated.
“There are instruments that we use to check the physical condition and amount of running of each player. There are a lot of matches, all close together, so we are trying to adapt to this situation.
Inzaghi has been linked with a possible move to the Premier League in recent months and was reportedly approached by Manchester United last year.
Does he feel he has been underestimated as a coach in Italy?
“I feel very appreciated by Inter and I was also at Lazio, a club that was my life for 20 years as a player and coach. I am very happy at Inter and I hope to stay there a long time.
“We coaches know that we are judged daily and with every decision we make. »
When it comes to his knowledge of the game, Simone Inzaghi admits that having an older brother in the sport like Pippo has helped him.
“From a very young age, Filippo and I had the Gazzetta dello Sport in our hands.”
