Deebo defends 49ers coach Shanahan against ‘hot seat’ notion

Deebo defends 49ers coach Shanahan against ‘hot seat’ notion originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Don’t even mention the possibility of Kyle Shanahan, 49ers coach get shot wide receiver Deebo Samuel.

Despite San Francisco’s 5-6 record, the six-year NFL veteran doesn’t have that.

In the latest episode of his podcast “Cleats and Convos” with co-host Liv Moods, Samuel put aside the idea that Shanahan was in the “hot seat.”

“I don’t think so,” Samuel told Moods. “Since I’ve been here, I don’t think we’ve only had one losing season, and that was COVID (2020 NFL season).

“Besides that, you can’t show me a losing season he’s had since I’ve been here. First year, Super Bowl; the second year COVID hit; the following year, NFC Championship; a year later, the NFC championship again; then last year, the Super Bowl. Like, why do you say he’s in the hot seat?

Deebo responds to the idea that Kyle Shanahan should be in the hot seat:

“Super Bowl… NFC Championship. Next year: NFC Championship again. Last year: Super Bowl… Why do you say he’s in the hot seat?”

Samuel’s point of view is indisputable.

San Francisco is 59-35 under Shanahan since the 49ers selected Samuel No. 36 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft. Since then, deep playoff runs — and heartaches — have become commonplace, and the 49ers’ current 5-6 record is an outlier.

And even though San Francisco is last in the NFC WestSamuel is not closing the door on the 2024 NFL season.

“We’re 5-6 right now, but I mean, we’re six games ahead,” Samuel said. “At the end of the day, Kyle is one of the smartest and, you know, player coaches people can ask for. I don’t get into “He’s in the hot seat,” “He’s this,” and “He’s that.” You can’t show me a losing season he’s had since I’ve been in the league.

“I just watch him coming into the building every day, just to see his approach to the game. We’re a little behind right now, but he doesn’t see it that way. If he can do it all over again, that’s where he’d want to be. »

Samuel is proud to play for Shanahan and trusts the offensive mastermind to continue leading the 49ers at a high level amid what appears to be the case. endless injuries and inconsistencies this season.

There’s still plenty of San Francisco football left to play and Samuel, without hesitation, expects Shanahan to be part of the journey.
