Teresa Weatherspoon is focusing on her future and not dwelling on the past.
It’s been almost two months since the Chicago Sky fired her as coach after just one season with the franchise.
“I’m excited,” Weatherspoon said during a conference call for her new team in the Unrivaled League 3 versus 3. “The only thing about me is I deal with things and let it go. I process and let it go.
It was the first time Weatherspoon spoke publicly since she was fired after a 13-27 season with Sky, which recently hired Tyler Marsh to replace it.
“I can’t just sit here. I can’t wonder why. I have to move,” Weatherspoon said. “This is my life, this is what I live for. I love what I do.”
She connected with Chicago’s young star players, Angel Reese and Chennedy Carter. Reese plays in the brand new 3-on-3 league, but not on Weatherspoon’s team.
“And you need to know this, and you need to stick to this – you’re not for everyone. …And I agree with that. I know the things I’ve done, I know the things I need to change. I know the things I had to go through and what I experienced, and I will do it again and again,” she said. “And in the process, you always learn a lot about yourself . I think of myself first, me first. What I learned, what I wear but at the end of the day, I’m fine. I’m awesome. I’m awesome.
A large part of Weatherspoon’s role in the new league will be player development. Something she has done at numerous stops throughout her coaching journey with the New York Liberty and New Orleans Pelicans.
Unrivaled coach Phil Handy, who spent time coaching the Los Angeles Lakers and Toronto Raptors, felt favorably about Weatherspoon.
“Look, does it hurt?” Is this disappointing? Is it frustrating? All of these things are included, but T-Spoon shows, like many other coaches, that…we have to keep going,” he said. “And our love and passion for the game is what continues to push us even when you have overcome these pitfalls.
Since being fired, Weatherspoon has spent time watching the New York Liberty – a team she played for in the early days of the WNBA – win its first championship. She was one of the team’s alumni who participated in the championship celebration parade.
