Game Summary
The Predators got off to an inauspicious start, as they were assessed a minor penalty just 17 seconds into the game for starting an incorrect alignment. When the official NHL roster was released, Steven Stamkos was selected as the starter in place of Filip Forsberg, but Forsberg was on the ice to start the game in place of Stamkos. Forsberg had been running line runs during warmups with fellow starters Ryan O’Reilly and Gustav Nyquist, so the starting formation listed on the lineup sheet appeared to be an error on the part of the coaching staff.
Nashville killed the ensuing penalty thanks to some critical and timely saves from Saros, and the game continued. The Predators had a chance to redeem themselves later in the period when Jonathan Marchessault took a penalty from Ben Meyers, but they were unable to capitalize on the opportunity on the power play.
Seattle finished the first period with the man advantage after Roman Josi was whistled for cross-checking against Matty Beniers; but Saros was once again sensational in the Predators penalty kill, making huge saves to keep the score at 0-0 heading into the first intermission.
Seattle finally broke a scoreless tie nearly 16 minutes into the second period, when Chandler Stephenson connected with Daniel Sprong to give the Kraken a 1-0 lead. Stephenson set up the play by moving the puck to fake a shot, opening the net for Sprong to dump the puck into.
The Kraken scored again in the first quarter of the third period on another play set up by Stephenson, a give-and-go in the neutral zone which was completed by Brandon Montour in front of the net to extend the lead to 2- 0. .
The Predators appeared to make it a one-goal game a little more than halfway through the third period, but what was initially called on the ice as a goal for Nashville was called back when an official review determined that Tommy Novak had thrown the puck into the net. .
With Saros filling in for the extra attacker, Yanni Gourde scored into the empty net at 17:17 of the third for the final 3-0.
