Finally, the Dishes and owner Steve Cohen met a free agent Juan Soto and his agent Scott Boras in California on Saturday, according to a report by Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
The meeting, led by Cohen as well as a contingent of top Mets officials, was reportedly “very detailed” and went “extremely well” as the Mets begin to make their case for signing the outfielder.
With Cohen’s support and a flexible payroll, New York not only has the resources to make the best offer for Soto, but also the ambition, which is why they are considered one of the favorites to land the superstar which will almost certainly get a deal. this will make him the highest paid player in baseball history.
If projections are any indication, Soto’s contract could last between 12 and 13 years for a fee in the range of $600 million or more.
That’s why the Mets’ presentation would have been a “big production” that surely would have required a lot of work and would once again prove their commitment to trying to sign Soto.
New York’s meeting with Soto comes a day after the owners of the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays held “productive” meetings with the perennial All-Star during which they also had “presentations in impressive person,” according to Heyman.
The Mets are one of seven known teams that have expressed interest in Soto, and there are also reportedly four “mystery teams.”
Just 26 years old and entering free agency for the first time in his career, Soto is coming off another spectacular season – his first with the Yankees who also view him as a top priority – where he slashed .288/.419/ . .569 with 41 home runs and 109 RBIs.
