THE Dishes need to start pitching next season and are reportedly looking to acquire a young pitcher on the trade market.
According to Jon Heyman of the Post, Mets are ‘one of the talking teams’ Garrett Hook this offseason. Hook, of course, is the best pitcher on the Chicago White Sox and was available at the 2024 trade deadline, but the Southsiders didn’t get the compensation they were looking for and kept him.
One of the Mets’ needs is the starting rotation after Luis Severino And Sean Manaea I went to explore free agency. So it makes sense to try and add a dynamic arm like Hook. But what are the White Sox looking for?
White Sox general manager Chris Getz talked about it about Crochet this week on 670 The score in San Antonio.
“We’re focused on getting players back into position,” Getz said. “This is our main objective in all trade negotiations. The good players must be there. We can’t force anything. We definitely need to improve our offense. It’s very clear. This is what we must do in any free agent trade or acquisition.
Crochet, 25, posted a 3.58 ERA and 1.068 WHIP in 32 starts (146 innings) in 2024. He was named an All-Star for the first time and struck out 209 batters, which gives him a strikeout rate of 12.9 batters per nine innings.
TThe Mets have plenty of position players in their farm system – many of whom have some big league experience. Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio And Luisangel Acuña have all had a cup of coffee – or more – in the majors and there are also prospects on the verge of a call-up like Dr.Gilbert.
The Mets certainly won’t be the only team considering a Crochet trade. The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres were teams against him at the 2024 deadline, so it stands to reason that they could compete for Crochet’s services again.
Crochet is under contract until 2026.
