Jose Mourinho received a one-match ban and a fine of around £15,000 for his actions and comments at the end of Fenerbahce’s spectacular victory against Trabzonspor.
The former Chelsea and Manchester United manager sprinted onto the pitch and attempted a knee slide after Sofyan Amrabat’s stoppage-time goal earned his Fenerbahce side a 3-2 victory in a packed encounter of incidents.
However, he then launched into an angry post-match tirade, condemning refereeing standards in Türkiye and appearing to question the impartiality of referees.
In a declaration The Turkish Football Federation said Mourinho’s comments were “contrary to sportsmanship, sports ethics or the concept of fair play” and “diminished the value” of football in the country.
They added that the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan coach’s remarks “aimed to cast a shadow over or discredit the impartiality of referees and other match officials.”
In a match filled with controversy, Mourinho was unhappy that home side Trabzonspor were awarded two penalties – both after consultations with the video assistant referee (VAR).
He also thought his team should have been awarded a penalty before Amrabat’s winning goal.
