49ers GM Lynch Hilariously Regrets Calling Deebo Before Trade Deadline originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
John Lynch made Deebo Samuel sweat a little with his poorly timed phone call Tuesday, and the 49ers general manager is now expressing regret about the timing of it all.
Samuel revealed on his “Cramons and conversations with Deebo Samuel” podcast earlier this week that he was at the 49ers facility for a photo shoot when he looked at his phone and saw the big boss calling – just two hours before NFL Trade Deadline Tuesday at 1 p.m. PT. Naturally, he panicked before picking up.
Three days later, Lynch, full of remorse, joined KNBR’s “Murph & Markus” show to detail their side of the story and how things happened.
“My oldest daughter, I’m really proud of her, she works at the NFL league office in Santa Clara,” Lynch said. “She went out and got this job on her own, I didn’t even know about it until she got it. So they sent her for a commercial shoot with Deebo, so she came to my office , brought me coffee mid-morning, and Deebo and I are pretty close, so I said, “Hey Deebo, I just want to let you know, Lindsay is here and she’s directing this shoot.” And I could see Deebo was a little stunned. He knows my family and he never said anything.
“And then after filming, a few hours later, Lindsay came back into my office and said, ‘Dad! You can’t do that. Deebo thought he was going to be traded when you called. You can’t call a guy for a trade deadline.’ What a rookie move on my part. I’ve been doing this for a while now, and Deebo and I had a good laugh throughout the week, as did most of the guys on the team.
Rookie mistake indeed.
Samuel further explained on his podcast how Lynch was nonchalant about the phone call, while the star receiver tried his best to keep his cool.
He joked that Lynch even brought up the “zebra shoes” his daughter wore so “you couldn’t miss her” while filming. Because It is what was important back then, right?
The 1 p.m. PT deadline came and went, and after all that, Samuel still remained a 49er. Besides stressing out one of the team’s biggest stars, Lindsay was also angry with her father about another thing.
And it’s safe to say the 49ers executive has learned his lesson on all fronts.
“My daughter was just upset because I said she was wearing zebra shoes — they were cheetah print,” Lynch said. “Deebo loved his shoes. I didn’t even think about that!
“I’ll never call a player again at 11 a.m. at the trade deadline if I don’t do something.”
