THE New York Islanders announced Friday that the Stanley Cup champion defenseman Brent Sutter will be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame.
It will also usher in a new era for the exclusive group, as the team has announced plans to create a ring of honor before its induction:
The Islanders Hall of Fame, established in 1992, is a brotherhood of alumni whose notable contributions have led to the team’s success and whose leadership has had a significant impact on and off the ice.

The Islanders Hall of Fame has since received a new home in the lobby of UBS Arena, but it has also long been confined to the rafters of a banner bearing the names of the previous 15 inductees.
The Islanders’ new platform to honor their legends will follow in the footsteps of two NHL teams, including the Vancouver Canucks.
The Canucks Ring of Honor was founded in 2010, with four players enrolled in its first season. Since its inception, a total of eight players have been inducted into its ranks, including goalkeeper Roberto Luongo, forward Alex Burrows and defender Mattis Ohlund as its most recent additions.
As it gets closer to Long Island, the New Jersey Devils are building one of their own. In addition to the franchise’s five retired numbers, the team honored former owner John J. McMullen and defenseman Sergei Brylin.
A third member is expected to join the group in January.
Official details of where the signing will take place are yet to be announced, but the team has confirmed it will take place in the arena’s grandstand.
Sutter will be officially enshrined on January 18 before the Islanders’ game against the San Jose Sharks.
