How Minasian and Posey’s relationship evolved before Giants GM interview originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area
That of Zack Minasian The relationship with Buster Posey evolved slowly over many years, which helped him get promoted to general manager of the Giants.
San Francisco’s new second-in-command explained how he kept his distance from Posey when he first joined the organization.
“So, I joined the club after the (2018) season, and I just watched Buster in (2019) and in (2021), and my cadence in the clubhouse was, I want to be there,” Minasian told MLB Network. “But I also feel like as a member of the front office, I want our players to know that this is their space. And so I didn’t really know Buster as a player, but I I certainly observed on a daily basis, how he behaved, a consummate professional. So, coming into this role, I would rather say that we knew each other more than we knew each other.
After Posey assumed his role as president of baseball operations, he looked for someone with a scouting background and Minasian fit the bill, having served as the team’s vice president of pro scouting since 2022.
Still, Minasian explained that the relationship evolved organically before he received a formal offer to become general manager.
“As we started talking more and more about baseball, at one point he came up and said, ‘Are you interested in interviewing for this position?’ And obviously it was a simple ‘Yes,'” Minasian said.
“And as the process went on, we met once a week to talk about the work and how I saw things, how Buster saw the organization and, in Buster’s way, he was really about reaching into his office and saying, Do you want to do this?
“So, it’s very cool. It’s a very special moment for me. Something I’ll never forget. And listen, I’m a fan too, and it’s Buster Posey. It’s really cool to do this journey with him.”
Posey played his entire MLB career with the Giants, winning three World Series titles and the 2012 NL MVP Award before retiring in 2021. The 37-year-old joined San Francisco’s ownership group in 2022 before his recent promotion to president of baseball operations after the organization parted ways with Farhan Zaidi.
Posey and Minasian are expected to help land more high-profile free agents after the team failed to land Shohei Ohtani, who spurned San Francisco to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
With Juan Soto, New York Yankees slugger Among the other stars hitting free agency this winter, the duo will have a daunting task ahead of them.
Given their passion for baseball and proven track records on and off the field, Posey and Minasian are well-equipped to revamp San Francisco’s roster.
