“It’s going to be a big ask” – Everton boss Sørensen previews Chelsea clash

“It’s going to be a big ask” – Everton boss Sørensen previews Chelsea clash

Everton manager Brian Sørensen says his side will need to be at their best when they take on Barclays Women’s Super League champions Chelsea this weekend.

The Blue Girls take on the South West Londoners at Goodison Park on Sunday evening.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Everton boss Sørensen highlighted the quality of Chelsea’s squad and said his side needed to be in top form to get a result.

“They have an incredible team with quality players, regardless of the composition,” Sørensen said.

“Sonia (Bompastor) could not have started better in terms of results. I still think maybe they need to improve in certain parts of the game, but when you win, there’s not much to complain about.

“It’s going to be a big ask for us, but it is what it is. We will have to be ready and we will be. We will do our best to try to achieve a result.

Everton are known for playing aggressive football against top teams and Sørensen wants that theme to continue. He doesn’t want his team to have to defend deep.

He said: “We have to be at our best defensively. We had a bad habit, maybe not against the best teams, where we conceded a goal in the first 10-15 minutes and we don’t want to do that against Chelsea.

“Defensively we are always super solid, we never waste many chances and it has to be the same against Chelsea.

“We’re going to go out, try to apply pressure in the areas where we can. We don’t want to defend too much in and around our box because that’s Chelsea’s quality. We have to be at our best, like we were at the Emirates. I’m going to prepare the team to go out and win, see if we have a chance to create something on Sunday.

Everton have scored just once in their opening five Barclays Women’s Super League matches, but Sørensen is pleased with his side’s efforts to create scoring chances.

He said: “Last year we really struggled to create chances, but this year the offensive stats are much higher. We get into (goal) situations.

“We have to continue to work to improve (in conversion opportunities). We have the players in the team to do it, but we also lack quality with the players out.

Everton’s Barclays Women’s Super League match against Chelsea kicks off on Sunday evening at 6.45pm. Tickets remain on sale and can be purchased by by clicking here.
