TOKYO (AP) — Top-seeded Qinwen Zheng of China won the Toray Pan Pacific Open title with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over American wild card Sofia Kenin on Sunday and clinched her spot in WTA finals next month. .
Zheng, ranked No. 7, who won gold at the Paris Olympicsfired 16 aces and faced just one break point throughout the 1-hour, 52-minute victory in Tokyo over the 2020 Australian Open champion.
Zheng, 22, won his third title of the year and his first on hard court since winning in Guangzhou last year. She is 28-4 since Wimbledon, including a 12-2 run during the Asian swing of the tour.
Kenin, 25, put in one of the best performances of the season. The American was ranked No. 4 at the start of 2020. However, a series of injuries, including ankle and quadriceps pain, caused her WTA ranking to plummet to its current level of 155.
