Celtics waive Lonnie Walker IV ahead of season opener: report originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston
Lonnie Walker IV’s quest to make the Boston Celtics’ opening day roster has failed.
The Celtics give up Walker, Shams Charania of ESPN reported Saturday. Walker had signed a contract (exhibit 10) with the Cs on August 28.
Teams now have the option to claim Walker on waivers, but if he clears waivers, he will return to the organization and join Boston’s G League affiliate in Maine.
Walker always faced an uphill battle to make the final roster. The C’s would have put themselves in a tough spot with roster flexibility and finances. If he lands in Maine, there could be opportunities down the road. https://t.co/ea3UFAQxC5

Walker averaged 9.7 points in 17.4 minutes per game for the Brooklyn Nets last season and is three seasons removed from averaging a career-high 12.1 points per game with the San Antonio Spurs in 2021-2022. He showed flashes of production in the preseason with Boston, but couldn’t crack a spot on a full Celtics roster that returned 13 players from last season’s title-winning team.
The Celtics now have an open spot before their first regular season game against the New York Knicks on Tuesday October 22.
