The problem with NBA nicknames is that they are almost always organic in terms of origin – and it’s often almost impossible to pin down where exactly that origin comes from. And this is the case for Boston Celtics big man reserve Luc Kornet and its popular “Green Kornet“nickname based on a recent article on the subject by Boston Dot Com’s Luc Scotchie.
When asked about the origins of his superhero-inspired alter ego, the player admitted he was unsure. “The Green Kornet kind of happened when I got traded,” the Vanderbilt alum explained about his understanding of the origin story of his nickname. “Honestly, I don’t even know (where the name comes from).”
Kornet believes the nickname may have been coined by Celtics analyst and former player Brian Scalabrine and was likely inspired by the superhero character “Green Hornet.”

“People don’t really call me that, at least not commonly in our organization,” Kornet admitted.
In the press and on social media, however, the Kornet nickname is not only visible, but common when the 7-footer does good things on the court – and with his game accelerating as the 2023-24 season advances, the Vert Kornet is rolling again.
At least on the platform formerly known as Twitter, anyway.
