Rose’s death in Clark County was announced Monday, triggering a wave of tributes as well as more difficult questions about a man’s legacy with three World Series titles, MLB record, lifetime ban for betting on baseball, tax evasion conviction and rape allegation.

Rose spent her last full day of her life appearing with other Reds legends at an autograph showbut he spent much of his life after playing as a baseball outcast. After discovering that he had played on his own team as manager of the Reds, Rose agreed to a permanent ban from baseball with the understanding that he could seek reinstatement as long as he remained in MLB’s good graces. He spent years lying about his gambling and at one point refused an offer on the condition that he tell the truth and stop playing.

Before that, Rose left an indelible mark in the MLB record books by continuing Ty Cobb’s hit record. He retired with 4,256 hits, a mark that may never be touched again, along with 17 All-Star selections, three batting titles, an MVP award, two Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger and a rookie of the year award.
