Andre Iguodala is taking over as interim executive director of the National Basketball Players Association following the resignation of Tamika Tremaglio, the union announced Thursday.
Tremaglio, the union said, is “leaving his position to pursue new opportunities.” The NBPA executive committee approved Iguodala’s appointment, the union said.
Tremaglio wasn’t even two full years into her four-year tenure as executive director. It was not immediately clear whether Iguodala, the four-time NBA champion who retired after last season and has been a longtime union leader, would be interested in the job on a permanent basis.
The change at the top of the union seemed like a surprise, given that Tremaglio revealed Tuesday that she had just met with the Indiana Pacers — the second team she visited this season, after once with the Atlanta Hawks in October — and that she planned to be back in Indianapolis for All-Star weekend in February.
“I am honored to take on this role and serve the players, who are the heart and soul of the NBA,” Iguodala said in a statement distributed by the union.
While the NBA and NBPA are in constant communication on various issues, the biggest issue facing both sides won’t be a major topic for several years. The league and its players are still in the early months of a new collective bargaining agreement that will be in effect at least until October 15, 2028 and possibly through the 2029-30 season.
“His leadership on the NBPA Executive Committee was imperative during multiple rounds of CBA negotiations, and he allowed our players to think like the business titans that they are,” Tremaglio wrote of ‘Iguodala on social media last month.
