Shanahan believes ‘Patriot Way’ endures after Belichick and Brady originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

Programming Note: Watch Kyle Shanahan’s full interview on “49ers Game Plan” with Greg Papa on NBC Sports Bay Area tonight, immediately following “Giants Postgame Live.”

Bill Belichick And Tom Brady are gone, but the “Patriot Way” remains alive and well ahead of New England’s Week 4 matchup with the 49ers.

During an interview on NBC Sports Bay Area’s “49ers Game Plan,” Kyle Shanahan discussed how first-year coach Jerod Mayo is continuing Belichick’s legacy by living up to the standards set during the Patriots’ dynastic run over of the last two decades.

“Definitely. With Mayo taking over, people have been there on defense,” Shanahan told Papa when asked if the Patriot Way was still evd=”They’ve played three games so far, but the scheme is the same, the mentality is the same. Bill has had this project there for 20 years. Their head coach has played there, he has been coaching there for a long time, so he also knows it inside and out.

The defensive coordinator also did both. Just watching them on tape for those three games, it’s very similar. They do the same things, their fronts, their coverages and just the fundamentals of how they run, how they attack, how they get rid of blocks. They’re a very good defense and they’re going to be a very good team throughout this year. »

New England enters its Week 4 game against San Francisco with a 1-2 record, but is the The 10th ranked defense in the NFL in points authorized for three weeks. The Patriots’ record may not reflect how tough opponents they have been this season, especially after losing a 23-20 thriller to the undefeated Seattle Seahawks in Week 2.

The last time these two teams faced each other was in Week 7 of the 2020 NFL season, with the 49ers recording a resounding victory 33-6 against the Patriots in Foxborough.

Now, four years later, San Francisco is aiming for a similar performance on its home field, aiming to bounce back from back-to-back losses to the Minnesota Vikings and Los Angeles Rams.

According to Shanahan, this will not be an easy task.
