Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Robin Lehner spoke to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and released a statement explaining why he missed his mandatory preseason physical.

Lehner last played in the NHL on April 20, 2022, and underwent hip surgery that summer. Heading into the 2024-25 season, he was not expected to return. He is entering the final season of a five-year, $25 million contract, with an effective cap of $4.4 million in 2024-25.

According to Friedman’s article, “All players on the long-term injured list must undergo a physical before camp to determine if they are still unable to play. Failure to do so could, in theory, result in a termination of their contract. According to multiple sources, everyone involved knew Lehner would not be there. Those same sources say the NHL, NHLPA and Vegas are working on a solution.”

Lehner issued a brief statement explaining why he was not present.

“All I can say at the moment is that everyone knows why I couldn’t be there. I’m calmly waiting for things to sort themselves out.”

This is a unique situation that will hopefully be resolved soon.
