The SEC’s two longest-tenured head football coaches will be on opposite sides of the field Saturday night at Kroger Field.
Kirby Smart, in his ninth season, brings his number 1 Georgian football team in Lexington for its SEC opener.
Mark Stoops, in season No. 12, is 74-66 with the Wildcats Iincluding 1-1 this season after a 31-6 home loss to South Carolina last week.
“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mark,” Smart said. “He and I have become very good friends. He’s one of the best in the business. He’s done a tremendous job at Kentucky the whole time he’s been there. His teams are always very disciplined and very physical.”
Stoops wants his team to be more disciplined after last week. He used the word “embarrassing” to describe the 11 penalties for 63 yards.
“We have to get better, as you know, the schedule gets even tougher when we play Kirby’s team, Georgia, the No. 1 team in the country,” Stoops said. “I guess you could flip a coin between them and Texas. They both look awfully impressive.”
