Former President Barack Obama received a warm welcome when he made a surprise appearance to cheer on Team USA as they took on Europe on the first day of the Solheim Cup in Gainesville, Virginia.
THE Solheim Cup The Solheim Cup is a biennial competition between the top female golfers from the United States and Europe. This year’s competition began Friday morning and will continue through the singles round on Sunday. The United States is looking to win its first Solheim Cup since 2017.
The U.S. team, led by Stacy Lewis, includes top players such as Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, Allisen Corpuz and Rose Zhang.
Obama is a keen golfer and has played the sport throughout his presidency. The Solheim Cup is held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, where Obama is a member.
Obama had already surprised the American team at a team dinner on Monday.
The Americans won Friday morning’s Foursomes session 3-1, although they still have one session to play Friday afternoon, two sessions on Saturday and a final round of singles on Sunday.
