If a picture is worth a thousand words, these reactions from the Phoenix Mercury are priceless.
The Mercury laughed in shock or winced as they saw the photos of their younger selves their social media staff showed Diana Taurasi and her teammates in the players’ tunnel before their 90-77 home loss to the Washington Mystics last Thursday.
In a video clip posted to the Mercury’s Instagram and TikTok accounts on Saturday, the Mercury’s social media team pranked the team by asking them to sign the photos. Teammates then pointed out their old photos, which included Brittney Griner’s teenage years as a soccer player, Sophie Cunningham in her high school soccer uniform with shoulder pads and Taurasi in a glamorous modeling shot with sparkly earrings and a beige silk blouse.
“You are all wrong,” Natasha Cloud said with a laughing emoji in the comments of an Instagram video.
Taurasi, known for her usual all-black outfit of a zip-up jacket, pants, sneakers and hair pulled back into a bun, laughed at her glamorous photo. She immediately returned the photo, blushing and laughing with the permanent marker in her hand.
“That’s when the WNBA was harassing us,” Taurasi said, referring to her earlier career after entering the league in 2004.
Cunningham frequently shows up to Mercury home games in Barbie-style dresses. But when she noticed the photo of herself taken when she scored a basket for her alma mater, Rock Bridge High School (Columbia, Missouri), Cunningham hilariously tore it up, threw it on the ground and kept walking, laughing.
“Honestly, fuck you guys, BUT I could outdo you,” Cunningham said in the comments section.
Griner was given a photo of herself with two big braids and simply said, “Wow, that’s tragic” several times after her initial laugh. Kiki Herbert Harrigan had her mouth hanging open and her eyes wide open staring at her photo. Celeste Taylor was given her Sweet 16 body shot. Monique Billings saw her high school photo and said, “Dang, y’all should throw that one out.” Cloud, who wore a backward Philadelphia Phillies cap to the game, ran away after seeing a photo of herself in the photo with her hair done up.
There was another video clip of Griner going further, making fun of all these photos.
“Oh! Look at Diana in a dress, with silk on the t-shirt,” Griner joked.
