Florida: Former world number one Naomi Osaka has dropped out of the women’s top 10 for the first time since winning the 2018 US Open title, in the latest WTA rankings, released on Monday.
Osaka, 23, moved up from seventh to 12th, ending her 140-week streak in the top 10, a streak that began on September 17, 2018.
Earlier this year, the Japanese player withdrew from the French Open and Wimbledon due to mental health issues, and took an indefinite break from tennis following her US Open defeat.
Meanwhile, two-time Grand Slam major winner Garbine Muguruza moved up from ninth to sixth, her highest ranking since July 2018, after winning the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic last week.
Another player, Mai Hontama, made her WTA main draw debut through qualifying in Chicago. The 22-year-old advanced to the quarterfinals by outclassing Caroline Garcia and Shelby Rogers before losing to eventual champion Muguruza. Hontama’s ranking rose 39 places, from No. 200 to a career-best 161.
Ons Jabeurm, who reached his fourth career final and third of the season in Chicago, set a new career high, climbing two places to 14th.
Anett Kontaveit reached the second round in Chicago before withdrawing with a left thigh injury, but her recent hot streak sees her return to the top 20 for the first time since August 2020.
The biggest rise in the top 200 this week was Usue Maitane Arconada. The 22-year-old American won her fifth ITF title and second at W60 level in Berkeley, California, and climbed 49 places to No. 189.
