After being beaten 107-89 in the first game, the Dallas Mavericks showed more fight against the Boston Celtics but still lost, 105-98 in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday. Unlike the first game of the series where the Mavs fell into a big hole from the start, the rematch was a see-saw battle. Luka Doncic got off to a fast start, but the Celtics defense suppressed him in the second half to lead 2-0.

Jayson Tatum had another rough shooting night, finishing with 18 points at a 6-for-22 clip, but had nine rebounds and 12 assists. Jrue Holiday carried the scoring sticks with 26 points and added 11 rebounds along with stellar defensive play against Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Boston Celtics vs Dallas Mavericks match summary

The Dallas Mavericks, who wanted to avoid a big deficit like they did in the first game, checked on this goal after the first quarter. Doncic’s 13 points in the first 12 minutes gave the visitors a 28-25 lead against the Boston Celtics.

Kristaps Porzingis didn’t come out on fire but scored 10 points in the first half. He also had three rebounds and a block in another superb performance coming off the bench. Jrue Holiday was the Celtics’ best man, scattering 17 points to help Boston take a 54-51 lead heading into the halftime break.

After a dazzling first half, Luka Doncic calmed down in the third quarter. The Boston Celtics defense made him work extremely hard to add six points to his total. The Dallas Mavericks seemed to have their momentum at the end of said period. However, Payton Pritchard’s desperation 34-foot heave made it 83-74 for Boston heading into the fourth quarter.

The Celtics held a double-digit lead for most of the fourth quarter. Derrick White’s deep 3 pushed Boston ahead, 103-89 with 3:34 left. Dallas cut it to 103-98 after Luka Doncic’s and-1 against Al Horford. The Mavericks could have gotten closer, but White and Jaylen Brown combined to stop a PJ Washington streak.

A Brown layup capped the Celtics’ impressive 105-98 victory.

Kyrie Irving, Luka Doncic, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown at 3 points tonight

Luka Doncic was the most prolific scorer tonight, making 4 of 9 3-point attempts. Kyrie Irving, however, couldn’t get going, missing all of his attempts from the same distance.

Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum there were also displays of remote rainbow nightmares. Each of them made only one 3-point shot out of a total of 12 shots.
