Carrie Underwood hit her 11th year performing the opening theme song for Sunday Night Football, and as the playoffs get underway, fans are wondering if she’ll sing versions of the song for playoff teams as well. The short answer: no, she won’t be performing the song for the wild-card round.

Underwood spoke with The morning mashup on SiriusXM Hits 1 last month and mentioned how she recorded the song so she could adapt it for each regular season game. For the uninitiated, the theme song “Wating All Day for Sunday Night” is inspired by Joan Jett’s “I Hate Myself for Loving You.” It also includes mentions of the teams that will compete that evening. So, does Underwood record a new theme song every week?
Yes and no. “It’s a master version, top to bottom, then filled lines,” Underwood said. The morning mashup. “When we record, we do it at the same time. I do all of the main version, but then we go through and get all the games from each week of regular season football, and then we move on to the playoffs. And then I sing about all the possible combinations of teams that could possibly compete against each other.
Although it looked like Underwood was going to perform the playoff theme song, his intro was not played during Sunday’s wild-card round.
Carrie Underwood also realized the impact her song had on players after Travis Kelce approached her and thanked her for the motivation she provides.
“I think my favorite is when…I realize it’s like, before these guys played in Sunday Night Football games, they were watching Sunday Night Football,” she said. “And I’ve been recording the theme for 11 years, so some of these guys were younger, watching these football games, just thinking, ‘Oh my God, if I could be on Sunday Night Football.’ And then when they arrive, I’m a little bit part of their journey, which is really cool.
