ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips addressed a number of topics when he took the podium Wednesday morning at the 2022 ACC football kickoff in Charlotte, including playoff expansion of college football.
Phillips said the conference “continues to support the expansion of the College Football Playoff.” The league voted against expansion last year, he said, because issues such as the new FBS schedule need to be addressed.
“As you know, the ACC has taken what we believe to be a necessary position regarding the proposal in last fall’s call for proposals,” Phillips said. “This was based on what we feel we all need to come together on before rushing into a new model: the implementation of a 365-day calendar, health and safety, and several other elements that you are familiar with . Engagement is underway with our schools and my fellow commissioners to chart a path forward before the current CFP contract expires in 2026. We had two excellent meetings in April and June, and I am confident that our concerns and those of others will be taken into account. be resolved, and a new model with better access will eventually come to fruition. We will do our part in the ACC to make this happen, but there is still work to do.
Phillips indicated progress has been made on expansion, saying CFP commissioners made “great progress” in their last two meetings this year.
Phillips expects there will be news in late August regarding progress toward a new CFP structure, although he said there is a lot to discuss.
“We’re making progress with the transformation committee, and I think you’ll see something pretty substantial at the end of August, with more work to do,” Phillips said. “I think these things are moving forward together, with a new NCAA president. I do not expect that we will meet in September, when we meet, to announce a new structure of the CFP.
“But I think we made great progress in our last two meetings, in April and June, and everyone is motivated to come together. So, I don’t know if there’s that separation now with these things. We will see. But I think health and safety, the review of the 365-day calendar… We’ve talked about access, automatic qualifications… there’s a lot to discuss. But those things, again, I would tell you I don’t think they really separated that much.
