Despite rookie Victor Wembanyama’s obvious success so far this season, the Spurs still have a lot of work to do on the NBA Draft front in order to get back into contention.
And that will start with finding a potential point guard to learn and grow alongside Wembanyama for the foreseeable future.
Fortunately for San Antonio, with the current trajectory they are on, there are a myriad of potential point guards that should be within their reach come 2024 draft night.
The first and most talked about regarding the Spurs will probably be Serbian guard Nikola Topic, who has skyrocketed in this cycle with gaudy numbers.
Along with averaging 18.6 points, 6.9 assists and 3.7 rebounds while shooting 52% in one of the best leagues in the world, Topic would be a dream pick next to the phenom 7-foot-4 already in San Antonio.
He has a solid handle, deft passing and expert-level pick-and-roll navigation that would make his fit with Wemby solid.
Other options at the top of the draft would be Isaiah Collier, a bulky offensive dynamo currently making his name for the USC Trojans, and do-it-all combo guard Stephon Castle.
Collier still has a way to go in terms of overall development, but he hasn’t managed to hide the potential star power bubbling beneath the surface. Castle may not be considered a pure point guard at the moment, but there’s no denying his potential as a giant ball handler.
No matter who the Spurs choose on draft night, walking away with a prospect who will orbit their sun that is Wembanyama for the next decade will be crucial.
