NASCAR is an amalgamation of exciting opportunities and heartbreaking losses. While the splendors of race victories are more often highlighted, drivers who couldn’t keep up the pace fall back into the shadows. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is well aware of this fact and did not hesitate to reveal a bitter truth to his podcast audience.

Mark McFarland drove for JR Motorsports a long time ago, and his time racing is now a distant memory for most people. However, Dale Jr is on a mission to revive untold stories about people in NASCAR who aren’t in the spotlight. Still, the subject of McFarland is a difficult and emotional one for Jr, as a former JRM member recently shared.

Dale Jr recently invited Team Penske manager Jefferson Hodges to an episode of Dale Jr Download. And soon after, the two began to unearth heartbreaking memories of their time working together. Hodges addressed the subject of Mark McFarland’s departure from JR Motorsports, a topic that brings some remorse for Dale Earnhardt Jr.

Dale Jr asked Hodges about his last six months at JRM, a time when McFarland was injured. Hodges replied: “So I knew Mark getting hurt was more serious than just Mark getting hurt. Physically, he would recover. The problem was that Martin Truex Jr, who was a two-time Xfinity champion, and Robby Gordon, who would spin the wheels on anything, were going to replace Mark. And the experience they had alone was going to help speed everything up, right? »

Then Hodges moved on to the darker side of the story. “As if Mark doesn’t know what’s right or wrong.” That’s how he and I ran, like we were just running and learning as we went. All these things, they were getting ready to come out, right? Everyone who was showing off, pointing the finger at Mark, and there were many, was preparing to be exposed. And all of this was going to be magically fixed at the expense of Mark’s injury.

Hodges then revealed the real reason for his departure from JR Motorsports: “It definitely wasn’t in the plan. Once you released Mark, I took it personally.

In 2006, Mark McFarland was released from JR Motorsports and his No. 88 Chevrolet was taken over by Martin Truex Jr. He had placed 22nd in Busch Series competition thus far. At that time, Dale Earnhardt Jr cited concerns about providing a certain level of performance to sponsors as the reason for McFarland’s release.

The change brought a lot of disappointment and uncertainty for McFarland, who himself had said his transition from driver to crew chief was difficult.

Mark McFarland had marked his running journey. He won 16 of 18 Late Model races at the now-closed Old Dominion Speedway in Virginia. But after his failed stint at JR Motorsports, a wind of change blew through his career. His destiny was to become team leader, but he did not accept this change with as much enthusiasm. But, in 2020, he made winning a top priority.

“When I started becoming a team leader, I still had this desire to drive” he said. “I had to do it to pay the bills but I still wanted to get out and drive. But it was when I began to devote all my attention to being a team leader that I began to have real success in this area. Driving race cars was top of mind in my mind and now it’s more on my mind. It’s still there, but that competitive fire is now there to win races as a crew chief. A win is a win, whether you’re driving or crew chief.
