World number 1 Novak Djokovic has taken the initiative to address concerns raised by players regarding the frequent changes of tennis balls used in tournaments. Prominent players like Stan Wawrinka and Ben Shelton have expressed dissatisfaction with the constant variation of tennis balls, citing them as a source of injuries. Djokovic’s discussions with senior ATP officials resulted in a positive response, with ATP leaders committing to hold meetings to resolve the issue.
The issue of changing tennis balls is a controversial subject in the sport, with several players calling for a reduction in the number of different balls used during different tournaments. Djokovic’s engagement with ATP officials could mark a turning point in resolving this long-standing concern.
“Actually, I just had a conversation with Andrea Gaudenzi, president of the ATP, and Massimo Calvelli, the CEO,” Djokovic said during the Paris Masters. “Because I haven’t been on the tour for a while, so I haven’t had a chance to talk to them.”
Having recently spent six weeks away from competitive tennis during the Asian period, Djokovic became aware of the problem while talking to other players. He remarked, “Of course, I saw the comments that more and more players were making about the balls used in different tournaments. In fact, Korda, the player I was practicing with today, told me that this was the fifth tournament in a row where he played with different balls. Yes, this inconsistency is a problem, and it’s what most players, myself included, complain about.
Djokovic sympathized with his comrades’ grievances, pointing out that using consistent balls could help prevent injuries. “You know, I think there needs to be a little more consistency with the balls to avoid any type of issues with the wrists, elbows and shoulders.”
he added.
He acknowledged that players have varying preferences when it comes to the quality and type of balls they prefer, depending on factors such as surface and style of play. However, striving for consistency remains a top priority .
Djokovic’s conversations with ATP management appear to have had a positive impact. He revealed, “But I think there’s actually a good understanding on the part of Andrea and Massimo regarding the player comments and the issues that the players have also communicated through the media. From what I understand , there will be board meetings soon where they will discuss different options and things they could do.
Although Djokovic acknowledges the complexity of achieving complete uniformity in tennis ball selection, he hopes steps will be taken to bring more consistency to the sport. This could involve using the same type of balls for tournaments on specific surfaces and swings, ensuring a fair and consistent playing experience for all athletes.
The discussions sparked by Djokovic’s initiative reflect the tennis authorities’ commitment to addressing players’ concerns and maintaining the integrity and fairness of the sport.
