Superstar point guard Trae Young has been reported as a potential trade candidate after becoming frustrated with the team’s progress, or lack thereof, and could demand his departure.
Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young has been named as a potential trade candidate next summer after reportedly being unhappy with the team’s progress and failure to make the playoffs in recent seasons.
The Hawks have made the playoffs the past two seasons, making it to the Conference Finals in 2021, before losing in the first round to the Miami Heat. But Launderer’s Report suggested Young could look to be moved if the Hawks continue to struggle, starting this season with a 16-16 record.
Atlanta has struggled in the draft and free agency, having not found another star player to line up alongside Young since he was drafted in 2018. The Hawks had hoped to find that in Dejounte Murray, but while the former San Antonio Spurs star has done well, it hasn’t resulted in any wins for the team.
The Hawks recently moved through their board of directors, naming a new general manager in hopes of building around Young and working with their star player in hopes of keeping him involved in their moves. Young reportedly played a big role in acquiring Murray – a dominant defensive player who should pair well with Young’s offensive game.
Young remains under contract with the Hawks after signing an extension that will see him stay through 2026-27, but he could trigger an early termination a year before that.
One player who might be available for them will be DeMar DeRozan, who is expected to request a trade from the Chicago Bulls – who are no longer contending for a championship.
DeRozan continues to play at an elite level despite being on the wrong side of 30, and has almost recreated himself as an effective three-point shooter and defender.
Hawks forward John Collins has long been linked to a trade and could bring a number of key player assets so the team can make a significant playoff push.
The Celtics have been interested in Collins in the past and could offer a package with a number of talented players if they believe Collins will help them compete for a ring this season.
