“You have to see it,” Cassidy said after explaining the basic plot to the press. “I actually left here yesterday thinking ‘did these guys get dropped from a time machine about 60 years ago to here without ever having seen ‘Rudolph the Reindeer at Red nose ?’ I mean, I was surprised.”
Cassidy was right with the 60 year reference. The film debuted in 1964, marking next year the 60th anniversary of its release.
The coach also referenced some Rudolph-themed items that hung in the team’s facility, saying he didn’t know who made it, but liked the decor.
The movie Rudolph, for the uninitiated, is about an “island of misfit toys” who eventually find their place in the world. The Golden Knights adopted the nickname “Misfits” during their inaugural 2017-18 season, as the team was full of players left unprotected by other teams in the expansion draft before coming together to achieve incredible success . The team won the Western Conference in its first season and ultimately won the Stanley Cup last season.
The coach was asked if there was a Rudolph on the team.
“I think we have a lot of Rudolphs,” Cassidy joked. “I think that’s why we won the Cup. That’s how I see it.”
