5 Things NASCAR Needs to Do Before It Completely Loses Its Fans

With all the recent lawsuits, controversies and leak internal messages are finally being made public – NASCAR’s problems no longer need to be spoken about in hushed tones. None of this was actually the cause of the decline, but it ultimately exposed fans’ concerns. complain approximately for years. And now that everything is finally out in the open, many people see this as the best chance for NASCAR in ages to actually make a difference.

Here are the changes fans say NASCAR needs to make to save itself.

1. Fire current leaders

One thing fans are demanding is the firing of the current generation of top executives – Steve Phelps and Steve O’Donnell. Now, it’s not that people necessarily think they were trying to sabotage the sport, it’s just that their leadership has taken NASCAR further and further away from the values and roots that made it so appealing to its longtime fans – or even appealing to new ones. The current leadership has led NASCAR to establish itself more and more in the corporate world, and in a very obvious way.

Getting rid of him might just be the symbolic kick in the arm the sport needs to start rebuilding trust with its fans.

2. Abandon the playoff system and reinstate a season-long points championship

The playoff format has been a huge source of discontent for fans – and NASCAR drivers – for years. To many people, this system made it feel like the consistency throughout the season was getting lost in manufactured drama. It’s a system that rewards those who are good at the right time, rather than being consistently good throughout the season, and that’s something a lot of people complain about.

By doing away with the playoffs and returning to a true points-based championship for the entire season, NASCAR could restore a sense of legitimacy and reward drivers and teams who deliver consistently throughout the season instead of one who peaks at the right time. And many people think it would help regain the respect that is missing in the sport.

3. Rework the car package. More power, fewer specs, less over-engineering

One of the things that has really stuck with people is the Next Gen car that was introduced in 2022. It was sold as a safer and more cost-effective option, but in reality, it was criticized by many fans – and even a few drivers – because it took away the raw excitement and raw emotion of what stock car racing used to be.

Even Denny Hamlin talked about it, call It’s a “fundamental car problem”. This echoes the same complaints people have had about the amount of power removed, the difficulty of overtaking, and the amount of power that has been taken out of the cars to the detriment of the race itself.

People say that if the cars weren’t so equal and had more power, were a little more free to do what they wanted engineering-wise, then the raw excitement and unpredictability would return and that’s what stock car racing is supposed to be about, right?

4. NASCAR needs to reconnect with its soul

Another complaint we often hear is that the sport has strayed too far from what made it great in the first place. Today there are too many road courses, too much contrived drama around restarts, stages and all the other things that make it feel like it’s more about spectacle than racing.

Fans will tell you that this change watered down what made NASCAR special: the oval racing, the good old competition, the fallible cars (but safety must always be first) and what happens on the track has real consequences.

Ditching some of these artificial gimmicks and bringing back some strategy and unpredictability would be a big step toward making the sport authentic again. For longtime fans, it’s not (just) about nostalgia, it’s about retaining the identity of stock car racing.

5. Give Broadcasts a Much-Needed Upgrade

One of the main things that irritates fans is not only what happens on the track, but also how it is displayed on their screens. Today, it is easy to compare the broadcast quality of each sport, and it is safe to say that the television presentation of NASCAR is late behind. This is especially true when comparing it to Formula 1.

Fans say they need a modern graphics package, better live news overlays, improved sync screens and more immersive coverage.

If they can pull this off, it could be the perfect solution to attract younger fans and bring skeptics back on board.
