The hit teen drama A tree hill was known for its heartbreaking storylines that constantly brought fans to tears. Running on The CW from 2003 to 2012, A tree hill delivered equal parts swoon-worthy content and absolute heartbreak. Although many of these moments revolve around the constant swapping of romantic partners within the cast, the series hasn’t shied away from tackling serious topics and the heartbreak that comes with them.
Death, car accidents, heart attacks, breakups, cheating, and more followed the main characters everywhere they went over the course of the series. There were a fair share of happy plot points to balance out the sometimes melodramatic tone of the series. For die-hard fans, these ups and downs are what kept them coming back for more. 15 Jake leaves Peyton (and the show)
Jake (Bryan Greenberg) was a fan favorite and Peyton’s (Hilarie Burton) love interest during the show’s first three seasons. He eventually moves to Savannah to co-parent his daughter, but Peyton shows up in season 3 to pick him up. It seems like for a while they’ll have a happy ending until Peyton whispers that she still loves Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) in her sleep. This causes Jake to break up for good, although some fans still believe it. Peyton and Jake should have been endgame.
14 Nathan is called up to the NBA
Nathan (James Lafferty) spends a lot of time in A tree hill playing basketball, and it causes ups and downs in his life. Nathan experiences intense character growth, and there is bad things about A tree hillit’s Nathan. However, his love of basketball, his wife Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz), and their family are not among them. In the season 6 finale, when Nathan told Haley he got called up to the NBA, it was a beautiful moment with incredible payoffs.
13 Peyton and Brooke’s biggest fight
Many fights have broken out between Brooke (Sophia Bush) and Peyton, but they are the best friendship of A tree hill. The two best friends bring a lot of drama to the show, and it takes more than a few seasons for them to put their differences aside. In the season 4 prom episode, Peyton discovers that Brooke slept with Nathan while they were still together. After everything they’ve been through with Lucas between them, what ensues is an emotionally raw confrontation. If they hadn’t had the chance to reconcile afterward, it would have changed their lives.
12 Brooke and Lucas’ (final) breakup
Brooke and Lucas were a lot of things, but being meant to be together wasn’t one of them. Their borderline toxic relationship, like it or not, lasted until A tree hill season 4, episode 1 “Same Deep Water As You” when Brooke finally puts an end to it, but their fight in the season 3 finale is what really put the final nail in the unlucky couple’s coffin. Brooke wants Lucas to love her the way she loves him, but there have been too many games and betrayals over the course of the series for the couple to ever be happy together.
11 The death of Haley’s mother
Haley wouldn’t have become the woman she became without her mother, Lydia (Elizabeth Armstrong). In season 7, she is diagnosed with terminal cancer and dies shortly after. While watching a kind character die is hard enough, seeing Haley suffer intense grief was a tearjerker plot point for the show. This is also a difficult time for Haley as the weight of keeping her sisters together in the face of this loss falls on her shoulders. It’s difficult to see such a strong character go through so much ordeal.
ten Katie shoots Clay and Quinn
There is a lot of iconic couples on A tree hill, but Quinn (Shantel VanSanten) and Clay (Robert Buckley) became a couple to root for in the show’s later seasons. However, in season 8, when Katie (Amanda Schull) kills them both, the audience has to watch because their lives are on the line. It’s especially painful when, in their state of uncertainty, Clay has to help Quinn recover. remember what happened to them. As the characters watch doctors try to save their lives, the audience wonders whether or not this will be the last time they are seen on screen.
9 Peyton discovers her pregnancy is in danger
Once Lucas and Peyton finally admit that they were meant to be together and marry, Peyton soon becomes pregnant. At first, this is cause for celebration, until she discovers that there is a possibility that she will die in childbirth. This realization leaves Peyton and Lucas wondering how to proceed and how Lucas might cope with being a single father and living without Peyton. No one wanted to see the couple torn apart, especially following what should have been happy news.
8 Nathan reunites with Haley after her kidnapping
Nathan is kidnapped in season 9 following his work as a sports agent with a Russian player. Although this storyline was a little out of left field, his reunion with Haley was not. One part of the series that will always strike a chord is the true love of their relationship. Even a kidnapping can’t separate them. At this point in the series, there were a few exaggerated A tree hill scenariosbut as long as it ended with a tearful reunion between this couple, fans were satisfied.
7 Dan shoots Keith
One of the most shocking twists in the series is Season 3, Episode 16 “With Weary Eyes, Weary Minds, Weary Souls, We Slept.” Public and the actors were shocked by Keith’s death A tree hill. This episode is filled with tears, but none were as harsh as when Dan (Paul Johansson) shoots Keith (Craig Eric Sheffer), his own brother. Dan may find redemption later in the series, but losing Keith as a character was much harder to forgive. Keith was more of a father to Lucas than Dan ever was, and deserved far better than to be shot down by his brother.
6 Quentin’s funeral
Quentin (Robert Lee Jones III) was tragically shot during a gas station robbery by Xavier (Devin McGee). Earlier in the season, Xavier also attacked Brooke. In A tree hill season 6, episode 3, “Get a cape. Wear a cape. Fly.” the cast comes together to mourn her loss, as Brooke must also come to terms with the reality of her assault. Quentin’s character never had a chance to be explored further in the series, and seeing him leave was a big blow to the series.
5 Peyton finds Ellie dead
Peyton makes questionable choices A tree hill, but when Peyton begins to connect with her birth mother, Ellie (Sheryl Lee), it’s a milestone for Peyton. At first, Peyton is inclined to keep Ellie out of her life, but eventually opens up and begins to view her as a mother. This means that when Peyton finds her dead after finishing their album together, it’s devastating. Peyton struggled to connect with the parental figures on the show, and fans didn’t want to see her lose another one.
4 Haley gives birth
Season 4, Episode 20 “The Birth and Death of the Day” sees a lot of ups and downs for the residents of Tree Hill. It’s graduation day and relations are more strained than ever. One bright spot is that Haley gives birth to her and Nathan’s son when she goes into labor in the middle of her graduation speech. Even though the surrounding circumstances are stressful and the middle of graduation isn’t the best time to give birth, the audience was just as excited as Haley and Nathan to welcome the healthy baby boy.
3 Jimmy commits suicide
A tree hill tackles big problems and isn’t afraid to get real. Season 3, Episode 16 not only saw the loss of Keith, but also Tree Hill student Jimmy (Colin Fickes) who commits suicide in front of Keith at school. The shootings are extremely traumatic, and the show doesn’t shy away from that. At first, the students are hesitant to cry because Dan used that moment to shoot Keith, making it look like Jimmy did it. However, when the truth comes out, the characters and audience feel a tragic loss.
2 Dan meets Keith in the afterlife
Dan was never a well-liked character and spent much more time on the show, being universally hated. Whether it was a deadbeat father to his two sons or the murder of his own brother, Dan was not an easy man to forgive. However, in his last moments of life, his brother Keith is seen reaching out his hand in forgiveness, and they depart together to the next life. Whether fans could also make that leap of forgiveness remains up for debate, but it was certainly an emotional end to a troubled man’s life.
1 Nathan jumps into the river
There was a lot weddings in A tree hill, but Nathan and Haley’s stands out. In the season 3 finale “The Show Must Go On”, Nathan and Haley renew their vows confirming their love for each other. However, this happy day is cut short when Nathan jumps into the river to save his uncle and Rachel (Danneel Ackles) in a fatal car accident. Leaving fans and Haley wondering what will happen next, this A tree hill the moment was as heartbreaking as it could be.
