Spurs’ obvious flaw this season has been giving the ball to their best player, Victor Wembanyama, in key positions. As a result, the team was often predicted to select Nikola Topic with their pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
If so, he would provide an immediate boost at point guard, their weakest position, but he might not start right away, especially if they make a trade for an established starter. Even so, adding a 6’6 19-year-old point guard with terrific court vision and impressive upside could be a smart move for the Spurs in the long run.
His size at his position and knack for getting to the rim is intriguing and could make life easier for Wembanyama, putting him the ball in the right spots. Wembanyama getting a high percentage of looks would not only help the offense, but also draw more defensive attention and make things easier for players like Devin Vassell.
Topic has flaws, namely question marks regarding his defense, but the Spurs need a point guard and he’s probably the best available in this draft. As a result, San Antonio could very well select a subject on draft night.
