Coach Bruno Lage could not resist the defeat of Benfica 3-2 against Qarabag in Estádio Da Luz in Lisbon, during the start in the Champions League.
Benfica president Rui Costa confirmed the departure of the 49 -year -old coach.
“I wanted to announce that we have reached an agreement with Bruno Lage, who is no longer Benfica coach. I would like to thank Bruno for everything he tried to do, all the dedication he has shown this year. Unfortunately, the time has come, the time for change. As for the new coach, we are waiting for ourselves to Vila Das Aves.
It was Bruno Lage’s second passage with the Eagles, having joined the Lisbon Club in September 2024, winning only the League Cup.
This season, Benfica won the Super Portuguese Cup and won three victories and a draw in the Portuguese championship.
The Eagles participated in two preliminary phases of the Champions League, eliminating Nice with two victories and Fenerbahçe, with a draw outside and a victory in Luz.
José Mourinho, who left the club after an early outing of the Champions League, is the main candidate to replace Bruno Lage at Benfica.
